I’ve had three patients in the last month that opted out of the Cal-MediConnect program on the Medicare side and were still put into an HMO on their Medicare against their desire to do so. Incredible what is going on! What use is having an ombudsman for this program if they won’t do anything about these illegal actions?

Three more patients at another facility who chose to opt out of the HMO on the Medicare side were enrolled against their wishes. They filled out the paperwork, and still were enrolled. The State is either doing this on purpose or their is a human error involved. My theory is that when individuals are being assigned HMOs on the Medi-Cal side, at the same time they are being enrolled in error into an HMO on their Medicare. Can this PLEASE be addressed? This is preventing people from being treated.

Wendy, I can help you. Most likely she has been welcomed into a Medi-Cal HMO. Almost everyone with Medi-Cal is going to be put into an HMO on their Medi-Cal. However, you do not have to have an HMO on your Medicare. In fact, you don’t want an HMO on you Medicare for a variety of reasons. Just call Healthcare options for your mom with your mom near the phone and tell them you want your mom to maintain regular/traditional Medicare. The number for Healthcare options is 1-844-580-7272. If they say something like, “we can’t do that,” then ask for a supervisor. The people at Healthcare Options are not being trained correctly and are often times giving out wrong information. You have the right to opt out of Cal Medi-Connect and maintain traditional Medicare.

In response to PSYD’s comment: Yes, most people with Medi-Cal will have to join some type of Medi-Cal managed care plan – either through Cal MediConnect or a standalone Medi-Cal plan. However, Cal MediConnect is a viable option for people who want extra help with care coordination and additional benefits beyond those offered by traditional Medicare.

Health Care Options staff are all trained on the program and are regularly updated as new information about the CCI is made available. If you qualify for Cal MediConnect, you should review all your health plan options to see which pan best fits your health care needs.

I had a Healthcare Options rep (named Inga) tell me this morning that she could not help my patient with opting out of the HMO that could have been placed on my patient’s Medicare. She told me that Healthcare Options has nothing to do with Medicare. I then asked to speak with a supervisor who corrected this misinformation. This is adequate training?
